For Longevity, a Healthy Lifestyle May Overcome “Bad Genetics”

If you lost your parents at a young age, you might worry about whether you'll face a similar fate. However, new research offers hope: a healthy lifestyle could outweigh genetic predispositions, reducing the risk of premature death by more than 60%.

In a study published in BMJ Evidence-Based Medicine, scientists examined data from 353,742 individuals of European descent who enrolled in the UK Biobank between 2006 and 2010, tracking them until 2021. Participants were categorized into three groups based on their genetic predisposition to a shorter or longer lifespan: short (19.8%), intermediate (60.1%), or long (20.1%).

Plus, their lifestyle habits—such as smoking, alcohol intake, and physical activity—were assessed using information from the US HANES study. Among the participants, 23.1% had a healthy lifestyle score, 55.6% had an average score, and 21.3% had an unhealthy score.

The results showed that people leading an unhealthy lifestyle faced a 78% higher risk of premature death, regardless of their genetic susceptibility. Plus, a healthy lifestyle offsets genetic life-shortening genetic risks by about 62%. The biggest longevity payoffs came from not smoking, getting sufficient sleep, exercising regularly, and eating a healthy diet.

For this meta-analysis published in the journal Nature Medicine, researchers examined data in the Global Dietary Database (GDD) from 1990 to 2018, which includes information on dietary habits from individuals in 184 different countries. Of the 11 dietary risk factors they examined, three played a significant role, including a lack of whole grains, eating too much refined wheat and rice, and consuming hefty amounts of processed meat.

Experts say whole grains—rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals—slow food absorption, promoting steadier blood sugar and energy levels over time. Conversely, refined grains, prevalent in processed foods, lack fiber, leading to quicker burning and blood sugar spikes followed by crashes. This cycle can increase insulin resistance and the risk of type 2 diabetes. Plus, processed meats, which are high in saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium, have also been associated with an elevated risk of type 2 diabetes.

This study underscores the importance of healthy eating to lower diabetes risk. Specifically, it highlights the importance of eating more whole grains and reducing your intake of processed foods to stay healthy and prevent disease.
